Of Emil Chau lyrics
I was bored today and was listening to music on youtube. The power of youtube is amazing.

Looking at the chinese and cantonese lyrics of Lang wo huan xi Lang wo you and its cantonese version, I realize that if a Taiwanese guy who wants to express his love for a Hongkong gal sent this song to express his love, the girl will immediately run away. Haha... how can lyrics in two languages be of the opposite meaning?!?! That is just so wat.....
Haha... lyrics are fun actually. =)

Using an analogy of a lady..
Let's assume that a song is a lady and the music can be likened to her attributes that can be easily observed e.g. sweet voice, looks, etc. while the lyrics are analogous to her character and personality.
Typically, we are first drawn to the song because of the nice music... just like a guy is first attracted to a gal because of her looks, for example.
Now, that we are hooked on the song, we take a closer look at the lyrics. and if it's a great piece of poetry, we love the song all the more. on the other hand, if it's a little crappy, we can live with it since the music is simply great.
One fine day, we get bored with the music... and if the lyrics suck, the song will slowly fade from our memory. but if it has got great lyrics, we kinda remember it better... and in some cases, become the anthem of our lives.
Just a thought here... at least great music with great lyrics stay around longer with me. Nice music tend to fade away with time... And there are a few songs with mediocre music but great lyrics which I still remember after 10+ years.
And then, there is always the arrangement, which can help make mediocre music sound 10,000 times better. In this regard, arrangement is like the cosmetics and nice dresses...
But hor.... a very important point which you left out is that...
at least for me lah
I am never drawn to a piece of music with good lyrics but bad music.
Hmm.. what does that imply? haha...
I think it's quite common not to be drawn to a song with bad music despite knowing the lyrics are great... I am guilty of that some times... It's human nature I think.
aiyo..
so u prove my point loh.
If a gal is not pretty, then even if she is really nice, nobody will notice.
--- human nature
Well, not ALL songs with bad music go unnoticed. and like what I mentioned earlier, there is always arrangement to save the day, or the clever use of instrumentals to bring out the best of a song.
Take for example, Dolly Parton's vs. Whitney Houston's "I will always love you". DP's version sounded like something my dad would shudder at while WH's rehash of it makes it sooooo different.
